If the 1920’s could be represented through the body of one human, it would most certainly be the small stature of Jessy Carolina. With a washboard in her lap, bottle caps on her fingers, and an old bandana ’round her head; Jessy Carolina emanates New Orleans during prohibition. If one is lucky enough to catch this spontaneous artist sing, they would find that her voice is the highlight of the performance (and that a Kazoo is an instrument too).
Her band, The Bill Murray Experience, formed 8 years ago in New York City. They have performed with many events conducted by The Jazz Foundation of America, Music Under New York, Music that Heals, Healing Arts Initiative, and Make Music New York. Eventually, The Bill Murray Experience retired their band name for something a bit more traditional.
She is now part of the group Jessy Carolina and the Hot Mess. The best place to catch her is busking on the streets of New Orleans or in the Greenwich Village Bistro of New York. She is also very active at the Jalopy Theatre and School of Music in Brooklyn where she teaches wash boarding lessons on the side.
Below is a Soundcloud link to her rendition of “Curse of an Aching Heart”, an old jazz standard. Listen with ease and please keep all legs, hands and feet inside the time machine at all times.
